CHARACTERS
ANGELIKA ABERHARDT: 21 years old. Her father Hans brought her up on his own, as her mother Annette was killed during an escape attempt to the west when Angelika was young. Angelika is a rebel in nature, and she dreams of worldly fame as a singer. She has a free, fun-loving spirit and she speaks her mind.
JOSH FISCHER: 21 years old. The nephew of Uncle Heinz. He is a Canadian musician visiting his uncle in East Berlin. He is a strong-willed young man, naive to the ways of an eastern bloc country.
ROLF KAISER: Mid-twenties. He is an East German policeman and strongy believes in the Communist party. He is in love with Angelika, who doesn't love him.
UNCLE HEINZ FISCHER: Fifties. The uncle of Josh. Jovial, cunning, sly. He has a good heart, but jumps at opportunity. He is an entrepreneur and is frustrated living in the east, not being able to exploit his talents to the fullest
HANS ABERHARDT: Late twenties. Then late fifties in 1989. Farmer. Angelika’s father, a warm man with a good heart. He believes that 'dreams are just dreams', and that you don't try to make them come true. His dream of escaping to the west with his family failed badly, and since then Hans has lived the Communist way of life, without causing problems with the government.
ANNETTE ABERHARDT: Late twenties. Hans' wife, Angelika's mother. She dies when she and Hans attempt to escape from East Germany with Angelika.
KLAUS SCHNEIDER: Twenty-one. Friend of Angelika Aberhardt. One of the leaders of the weekly demonstrations
